Being an agriculture hub, Uganda is known for its fresh foods. Matooke (plantain bananas wrapped in banana leaves and cooked by steaming) is delicacy in nearly all parts of the country.  It can be served with any of: groundnut sauce, beans, peas, beef, fish, chicken, among other sauces.

Other popular foods are:

  • the rolex (street food): an egg omelette and vegetables wrapped in a chapatti
  • Katogo: Traditional breakfast dish comprising matooke (bananas of the plantain time), cooked together with the sauce, usually beef, offals, beans or peas.
  • Luwombo: Luwombo is a traditional method of cooking, where foods are steamed in banana leaves.

 

Sweet potatoes, irish potatoes, cassava, posho, pumpkin, yams and rice are also common.
